Farhan Abdulrahman: A New Life Between Heritage, Career and the Future

More than a decade after arriving in Germany, Farhan Abdulrahman reflects on rebuilding his career, finding a new home and staying connected to Syria.

Farhan Abdulrahman: A New Life Between Heritage, Career and the Future

When Farhan Abdulrahman arrived in Germany from Syria in 2014, it marked far more than the beginning of life in another country. It was the start of a new chapter, both professionally and personally, shaped by the challenge of finding his way in a new society and building something new from what he already knew.

Today, more than a decade later, Farhan speaks to GlobalTalent24 Magazine about his life in Germany, his professional development and what it truly means to arrive in a new country.

He does not wish to speak in detail about the journey that took him from Syria to Germany. Not because that part of his story is insignificant, but because some experiences do not need to be retold again and again for their impact to be understood.

The journey was anything but easy. Even so, Farhan has made a conscious decision not to focus on the most difficult moments of the past. Today, he prefers to look at what has grown out of that new beginning: a stable life, professional security, safety and, above all, a future for himself and his family.

A professional identity that does not end at a border

Farhan had already worked as a laboratory technician in Syria and held a qualification that requires precision, responsibility and in-depth specialist knowledge.

But the war fundamentally changed everyday life in Syria. Career prospects, personal safety and long-term planning became increasingly uncertain. Farhan eventually decided to leave his homeland and make his way to Western Europe.

His arrival in Germany, however, did not simply mean continuing the career he had already built. First, he had to learn German. Then came another crucial step: having his professional qualification as a laboratory technician officially recognised.

Both required time, patience and a willingness to navigate structures that were unfamiliar to him at first.

This is precisely where one aspect of his story reaches far beyond his own experience. People who leave their home countries do not begin their working lives from zero. They bring education, experience, skills and an already established professional identity. The challenge is often to make that existing potential visible again within a new system.

Farhan succeeded in doing exactly that.

From a new beginning to professional continuity

After acquiring the necessary language skills and securing recognition of his qualification, Farhan was able to return to the profession for which he had trained.

Today, he has been working for many years at a hospital in northern Germany.

What can be summarised in just a few sentences was, in reality, a far more complex process. Learning a new language, understanding professional standards, having qualifications recognised and building an entirely new daily life at the same time requires more than technical expertise. It requires perseverance.

Farhan's journey also demonstrates the social value of successful professional integration. Qualified specialists are urgently needed, particularly in healthcare. When existing skills are recognised and put to good use, the benefits extend beyond the individuals themselves to the society in which they have found a new future.

Integration means more than language and work

Farhan now describes himself as fully integrated into German society and its way of life.

For him, however, integration was not completed with a language certificate, an officially recognised qualification or an employment contract. It developed over the years: at work, in everyday life, through contact with other people and through the responsibility he carries for his family.

Germany is no longer simply the country Farhan arrived in in 2014. It has become the centre of his life today. This is where he works, where his family lives and where he has built a new existence.

Yet arriving in a new society does not mean that the connection to one's former home disappears.

Home remains part of one's identity

Farhan misses Syria.

That bond is not shaped only by major memories. Often, it is the seemingly small things that matter most: familiar customs, food, friends, conversations and the everyday things we take for granted, whose significance sometimes becomes clear only when they are no longer within easy reach.

After all, home cannot be defined solely in geographical terms. It is made up of memories, people, language and cultural experiences.

Farhan sees no contradiction in this. A person can feel at home in Germany and still miss Syria. A person can be part of a new society without erasing their origins from their personal memory.

Modern technology makes it easier to maintain these connections. Messages, video calls and social networks cannot eliminate geographical distance, but they can create a sense of closeness across borders.

A story that inspires courage

Farhan's story is not one of overnight success. Rather, it shows how many small steps can, over time, grow into something lasting.

Learning a new language. Having a professional qualification recognised. Regaining a foothold in one's career. Finding one's way in a new society while also taking responsibility for one's family.

Today, Farhan has worked in his profession for many years and sees Germany as his new home without forgetting where he comes from.

His life shows that even a difficult new beginning can lead to a new perspective. Not every path is straightforward, and not every challenge can be overcome quickly. What matters is the ability to keep moving forward and to reshape one's possibilities step by step.

Farhan Abdulrahman's story therefore stands for something that extends far beyond his personal biography: where we come from shapes us, but it does not limit our future.

Sometimes, success begins precisely where a person finds the courage to rebuild their life under entirely new circumstances.

The GlobalTalent24 Team wishes Farhan all the best and sincerely thanks him for sharing his story with us.
