A New Beginning Between Syria and Germany

When Ahmad left Syria in 2015, he left behind more than his homeland. He left family, familiar surroundings and a daily life that had become increasingly uncertain because of the war. In Germany, he was initially looking for one thing above all: peace.

More than ten years later, Ahmad speaks to GlobalTalent24 Magazine about a new beginning that was anything but easy — about cultural differences, professional recognition and the realization that building a new life requires, above all, the courage to keep moving forward.

“When I came to Germany in 2015, I did not know exactly what to expect. At that time, what mattered most to me was finding a safe place and being able to think about a future again,” Ahmad says.

What may sound today like the beginning of a success story was, at the time, primarily a step into the unknown. A new country also meant a new language, different social norms, an unfamiliar administrative system and countless everyday situations that could no longer be taken for granted.

During this initial phase, Ahmad received support from German institutions, which helped him find his bearings. At the same time, he quickly realized that building an independent life in the long term would also depend on his own initiative.

Learning German as the Key to Professional Integration

One of Ahmad’s greatest challenges was the German language. Anyone who wants to establish a career in a new country must not only be able to demonstrate what they have learned. They also need to be able to communicate it.

“Learning German was one of the most important steps for me. Without the language, many things are more difficult. You need it in everyday life, when dealing with authorities and, of course, at work,” Ahmad says.

He persevered, creating the foundation for one of the most important milestones in his professional journey: in Stade, he succeeded in having his foreign qualification recognized for work as an assistant in the laboratory field.

For Ahmad, this professional recognition was far more than a document.

“That was a very important moment for me. I already had my education and knowledge before. But the recognition showed me that I could also use them to move forward professionally here in Germany.”

His experience highlights a point that is easily overlooked in discussions about international professionals: people do not start from zero when they migrate. They bring knowledge, education, professional experience and skills with them. The challenge is often to make that potential visible within a new system.

Syria and Germany: Two Countries, Two Ways of Life

When Ahmad compares Syria and Germany today, he sees many differences. Language, social customs, working life and everyday routines function differently. At the same time, he experiences both countries as diverse in their own ways.

For him, Syria is not simply the country that many people in Europe associate with war and displacement. It is his homeland, shaped by people, culture, memories and a life that existed long before his journey to Germany.

Over the years, Germany in turn became more than the place where he had found safety. It became the country where he was able to build a new professional perspective.

Only one aspect of life in Germany still seems to require some adjustment even after more than ten years: the weather.

“I have become used to many things by now. But the weather is still difficult for me,” Ahmad says with a laugh.

Anyone familiar with Syria’s climate who then experiences a northern German winter can probably understand what he means. Less sunshine, lower temperatures, rain and long grey days were changes that no government office or language course could have prepared him for.

When Home Tastes Like Syrian Food

Culinarily, too, Syria and Germany can feel worlds apart. For Ahmad, Syrian cuisine is closely connected to memories of home. Certain dishes, spices and flavors cannot simply be replaced by a new cuisine.

“Of course I miss Syrian food. German cuisine is very different. But fortunately, there are many Oriental and Middle Eastern shops here. I can find many of the products I know from Syria.”

What may sound like a small detail actually says a great deal about arriving in a new country. Integration does not happen only in government offices, language courses or the workplace. It also happens while shopping, over shared meals and in those everyday moments when something unfamiliar slowly begins to feel familiar.

The new does not have to replace the old. It is possible to build a life in Germany while preserving the tastes, language and memories of home.

Ahmad’s journey can now be summarized relatively simply: he came to Germany in 2015, learned the language, found his way through a new system and ultimately achieved recognition of his professional qualification.

But that short summary leaves out the hardest part: the uncertainty between those milestones.

The waiting. The bureaucracy. The first conversations in a foreign language. The moments when you know exactly what you want to say but cannot yet find the right words. And the need to keep going even when it is not immediately clear where the next step will lead.

“My journey was not easy. You have to be patient and you cannot give up immediately when something does not work. Many things take time,” Ahmad says.

Perhaps that sentence describes his path better than any success headline. Success rarely happens in one defining moment. More often, it is built from many small decisions to keep moving forward.
