From the Mediterranean to the Alps: Why Roger Found a New Home in Lucerne

A decision that reshaped a life

On a sunny afternoon at a beach in Barcelona, Roger could hardly have imagined that only a few months later his daily life would revolve around snow-covered peaks, crystal-clear lakes and mountain trails.

In his early thirties, the physiotherapist decided to start over in Switzerland. It was not an impulsive adventure. It was a carefully considered decision driven by the desire to grow professionally while building a life that better reflected his personal passions.

While many people dream of living by the sea, Roger was drawn to the Alps.

Lucerne became his new home.

The real challenge begins after the move

Moving to another country does not end once the boxes are unpacked. For many skilled professionals, that is when the real work begins.

As a physiotherapist, Roger first had to complete the recognition process for his professional qualification. New regulations, administrative procedures and plenty of patience were all part of the journey.

At the same time, he began learning German.

It is a language that challenges even experienced learners. In healthcare, communication is about far more than vocabulary and grammar. It requires precision, trust and empathy. Mastering the language became an essential part of his professional development.

Roger invested months in the process. Looking back, he describes it as demanding but worthwhile.

The mountains were never a compromise

Leaving Barcelona meant leaving the Mediterranean behind. For Roger, however, that never felt like a sacrifice.

Long before moving to Switzerland, skiing and hiking had already become his greatest passions. The Alps were never an alternative to the sea. They were one of the main reasons Switzerland felt like the right choice from the beginning.

Today he spends much of his free time outdoors, skiing in winter and exploring hiking trails and lakes around Central Switzerland during the warmer months.

He quickly discovered that hiking is deeply rooted in Swiss culture. Families, friends and colleagues regularly spend their weekends in the mountains. Sharing that passion made it easier to build new friendships and feel part of the local community.

Between two worlds

No matter how rewarding his new life has become, one part of it remains in Barcelona.

His family and many close friends still live in Spain. Whenever possible, Roger travels home, while his loved ones frequently visit him in Lucerne.

Over time, distance has evolved into a balance.

Not Spain or Switzerland.

But both.

More than a higher standard of living

Switzerland is often associated with attractive salaries and economic stability. For Roger, those were never the only reasons for relocating.

The opportunity to work in a healthcare system known for high standards, continuous professional development and quality of care mattered even more.

Combined with safety, outstanding infrastructure and immediate access to nature, it created a quality of life that goes far beyond financial considerations.

The courage to leave the familiar behind

Migration rarely begins with a dramatic moment. More often, it starts with a single decision.

A new job.

A completely new routine.

Roger knows that no fresh start comes without uncertainty. Yet he says he would make the same decision again.

Not because it was easy.

But because every challenge became part of a journey that helped him grow both professionally and personally.

Today, he looks across Lake Lucerne toward the Alps, works in the profession he loves and has found a place that truly feels like home.
