From the Atlantic to Zurich. Why I Left Tarifa Behind

There are moments in life when you realize that you either stay inside your comfort zone or find the courage to start over somewhere completely new. For me, that moment came when I left my hometown of Tarifa in southern Spain and moved to Zurich.

Tarifa is a unique place. The sun shines almost all year round, the sea sets the rhythm of everyday life, and life feels light and relaxed. Family and friends are always close by. That is exactly why leaving was so difficult. I was not just leaving my home. I was leaving the life I had always known.

The hardest step is the first one

Moving to another country as a young woman means facing new challenges every single day. A new language, a new culture, a new workplace, and an unfamiliar routine. At first, I often felt lonely. In Spain, conversations happen naturally. In Switzerland, it takes more time to build trust. People are kind and respectful, but also more reserved. Friendships develop more slowly, but they are often built to last.

Today I work as a Biomedical Laboratory Scientist in Zurich. I enjoy my profession and appreciate the modern working environment, the high professional standards, and the opportunity to keep developing my skills.

The work culture is also different. Spain is more spontaneous and personal, while Switzerland values planning, precision, and reliability. It took time to adjust, but today I truly appreciate that structure.

Patience always wins over bureaucracy

Moving to Switzerland also means dealing with bureaucracy. My diploma recognition took longer than expected and required many documents, translations, and communication with the authorities.

There were frustrating days when I questioned whether all the effort was worth it. Looking back, I know that persistence and patience made all the difference. Eventually everything was approved, and today I can practice my profession without limitations.

Between two worlds

People often ask me if I miss Spain. The honest answer is yes.

I miss my family, my friends, the sunshine, the ocean, and the relaxed lifestyle that defines southern Spain. In Zurich, life is more structured and quieter. People need more time before opening up, but relationships are sincere and lasting.

On the other hand, Switzerland offers excellent career opportunities, outstanding working conditions, financial security, and long term professional prospects. In the end, everyone has to decide what matters most. For me, the move was absolutely worth it.
